Calorie Balance

Why is it necessary to understand (and respect!) calorie balance when losing weight, even if you do not count calories in your diet or even if you are an opponent of calorie balance?

calorie balance

Most people who want to lose weight for the summer would surely choose a carrot cake and a green tea latte for a snack somewhere in the city centre as a better alternative to a burger and fries from a fast-food restaurant. (And they bragged about it right on Instagram about how they stick to their diet regime and eat healthy at all times). Because lattes are green and carrot cake is made of carrots, right?

No. Even though the green tea latte from the famous chain is really green and the carrot cake really contains (among other things) carrots, this small and seemingly "healthy" snack actually contains more energy than a double cheeseburger with chips and iced tea from McDonald’s. In other words, this "healthy" snack will sabotage your weight loss even more than a double cheeseburger and chips. Someone will surely think that it is much healthier to have an ultra-processed food that is green in colour and contains carrots than an ultra-processed food fried in vegetable oil. For health maybe, but health and weight loss are simply two different perspectives.

An ideal weight loss diet is, of course, one that is both healthy and effective for weight loss and contains healthy foods with the exclusion/limitation of industrially processed ones. At the same time, people will also develop new and more appropriate eating habits during the course of this diet.

So don't be fooled by charlatans who will tell you that a calorie deficit is not necessary for weight loss or that the calorie balance model is a "food industry scam". Learn to be aware of how much energy (at least approximately) different foods and meals contain when losing weight, and understand that even if something is green or contains carrots, it does not automatically mean that it contains fewer calories than a cheeseburger and fries or that it is automatically healthy.
