Does High Protein Intake Damage Your Kidneys?

Are you worried about the negative effects of high protein intake on your health and kidneys? According to current scientific knowledge, even long-term increased protein intake in the range of 1.5 - 2.2 g / kg of body weight in healthy people has no negative health effect, and in athletes and bodybuilders in the short term up to 3 g / kg of body weight, where high protein intake increases thermogenesis and satiety in athletes.

However, three principles must be observed: 1) observe a proper drinking regime; 2) do not increase protein intake by big leaps and bounds (a common risk in novice athletes); 3) do not choose an extreme nutritional approach that would virtually eliminate carbohydrates and fats from the diet for several weeks along with high protein intake (a common risk in competitive bikini fitness). If the total energy intake is made up of about 80% or more protein at the expense of other macronutrients (referred to as "rabbit starvation"), there may indeed be an increased load on the kidneys, a higher risk of kidney stone formation, reduced calcium balance in the body and an increased risk of bone thinning even in athletes.
