Spring Detox - The Truth?

It’s not even end of March yet and the internet and social networks are already bursting with ads for spring detoxes, which are sincerely and smilingly recommended by famous actresses, singers and influencers.

Although a paid advertisement through the mouth of your favourite influencer may say that thanks to these great detox products, vegetable juices or coconut water you will get rid of years of toxins, lose weight, improve your skin, hair, digestion and have more energy, the reality may be very different.

What "spring detoxes" really can't do

  • They do not perform any detoxification or cleansing that your liver, kidneys and digestive system can't handle, and they certainly don't remove many years of built-up toxins

  • They have no proven effect on improving your immune system, improving your liver function, and certainly are not a cure for any existing disease or cure you of cancer!!!

  • They will not cause any "hormonal optimization", they will not improve the function of your intestines and they will certainly not affect the pH and "acidification" of your blood

  • You won't lose a few kilos of fat during a week of fasting on vegetable juices

What actually happens

  • Due to drastic calorie restriction in the diet during 7-14 days, your weight can drop in the short term due to the depletion of glycogen stores in your liver and muscles and the exclusion of water from the body, which is physiologically bound to glycogen

  • Detoxifying drinks and herbs have a diuretic and laxative effect - due to the short-term drainage and emptying of the intestinal contents, your weight may actually drop in the short term, but once you return to your normal diet after a week or two, you will regain everything immediately

  • Induced diarrhoea does not wash away any deposits of toxin (which you do not have in your intestines), but on the contrary it can unnecessarily upset your gut microbiome

  • Due to the drastic calorie restriction and lack of protein during the "detox" you can unnecessarily burn your muscles, which will, again, unnecessarily "slow down" your metabolism

  • Your natural detoxification in the liver and kidneys may in turn be impaired due to the lack of amino acids in your diet

  • Extreme hunger can lead to the so-called yo-yo effect after the detox

  • Cleanses your wallet in the same way as alkaline or coconut water can

  • Your favourite influencer can thanks to you spend the whole winter in Bali

Let me emphasize at this point AGAIN AND AGAIN that the human body detoxifies itself 365 days a year and 24 hours a day and does not wait for any spring detox. For natural detoxification, prevention of civilization diseases, proper functioning of the immune system, fat burning, etc., our body needs the best quality diet and regular exercise all year round. If you have been consuming industrially processed foods and fast foods all year (or all your life), you cannot expect your health and conscience to be relieved by some "miracle" spring detox. It won't make up for anything. If you want to start living healthier, cut down on processed foods, add vegetables, quality sources of protein, carbohydrates and fats every day, ideally with a predominance of fresh and regional foods, and start moving more. This will do much more for your natural detoxification than following some drastic routines for a week based on FALSE but appealing claims.
